Rucking simply means long-distance walking with a weighted pack. In the military it is moving ones gear from one place to another in a backpack. Today, rucking is a form of active resistance training (ART) and is a great way to build strength and endurance, burn calories, and spend time outside. RUCK TO LIVE is an event sponsored by Veterans Connected to directly involve the community by generating awareness of the tragedy of veteran suicide. It is a way to illustrate the active resistance veterans may employ to battle the stressors that may lead to self harm, and form community amongst themselves and the community at large. With the cooperation of the City of Brighton, MI, Ruck participants walk a prescribed route through the community, stopping to pay tribute to fallen comrades or review the ideals for which they served their country. The Ruck culminates at the Brighton Veterans Memorial where the community is encouraged to celebrate life and the sacrifices made by our veterans and those still serving their country. Those with heavy rucksacks can now shed the burden they have been carrying. This act is symbolic of the burdens many veterans carry, but are now surrounded by a supportive community. The community is encouraged to participate in the Ruck walk with or without the weighted rucksack. Previous participants in the Ruck have stated that this event was the catalyst for them to choose life and find community rather than succumb to suicide and become another statistic.
